Intel Xeon D Desktop QuTS hero NAS with Four 2.5GbE Ports, Designed for Real-time SnapSync Data Backup and Virtual Machine Applications

The TS-h686 delivers enterprise-grade performance at SMB prices, featuring an Intel Xeon D processor and DDR4 ECC (Error Correcting Code) memory (expandable to 128 GB) for reliability. Running the ZFS-based QuTS hero operating system, the TS-h686 ensures data integrity and supports inline block-level data deduplication and compression, near-limitless snapshots, and real-time SnapSync. With the TS-h686, your business can achieve reliable performance with service-level agreements in various use cases, including mission-critical file servers, virtualization servers, collaborative video editing, or efficient data backup and recovery applications.

Powerful Intel Xeon D Processor with up to 128GB DDR4 ECC Memory
The TS-h686 utilizes an Intel Xeon D-1600 series processor and DDR4 ECC memory, which can detect and correct single-bit memory errors to prevent downtime and data loss. With support for up to 128 GB of RAM to handle heavier workloads, the TS-h686 provides a powerful and reliable NAS solution for demanding enterprise IT environments.

Set up SSD Caching to Improve IOPS with M.2 NVMe SSD
As SSD prices continue to fall and SSD capacity and performance continue to increase, businesses can easily leverage the strengths of SSDs. The TS-h686 features two 2.5-inch SSD drive bays and two M.2 NVMe Gen3 x4 SSD slots, allowing you to flexibly configure SSD caching to boost IOPS performance and reduce storage volume latency. This is especially suitable for databases and virtual machine applications. With the TS-h686, you can maximize both your storage capacity and performance without occupying 3.5-inch drive bays.

Quad-port 2.5GbE meets today's high bandwidth demands
With four native 2.5GbE RJ45 LAN ports (backward compatible with 1G/100M), the TS-h686 allows you to use existing CAT5e cables to boost network speed from 1 Gigabit to 2.5 Gigabit. Port trunking and failover support further meet bandwidth and reliability requirements, including virtualization, large file transfers, high-speed backup/restore, and real-time applications. QNAP also offers numerous options of managed and unmanaged 10GbE/2.5GbE switches to help businesses implement fast, secure, and scalable network environments without exceeding the budget.

RAID Z offers reliable data protection
Multiple RAID levels allow for flexible capacity utilization. RAID Triple Parity and Triple Mirror offer a higher level of data protection.

QSAL (QNAP SSD Antiwear Leveling) improves data security
SSD lifespan at the RAID level is automatically and regularly detected to prevent simultaneous SSD failure and improve your data security and system reliability.

App Center ecosystem expands NAS functionality
Apps for backup/sync, virtual machines/containers, content management, productivity, and other functions can be used to extend the application potential of the TS-h686.

Tiered Storage Configuration for a QuTS hero NAS
The basic setup requirements are similar to QTS. We recommend you follow these steps to achieve optimal storage efficiency and performance for QuTS hero.

Inline data deduplication, compression, and compaction improve data storage efficiency
QuTS hero supports advanced block-based data reduction technologies (including inline data deduplication, compression, and compaction) to reduce file size, save storage capacity, and optimize performance. For example, if 20 virtual machines are replicated on a NAS using the same template, the storage space required for all 20 virtual machines can be reduced by up to 95%. Regardless of whether it is primary or backup storage, the TS-h686 optimizes storage utilization to provide a reliable cornerstone for storage in the age of big data.

Real-time SnapSync ensures minimal RPO with real-time disaster recovery
Real-time SnapSync ensures that both primary and secondary NAS maintain identical data. When data is written to the source, it is immediately written to the target. If the primary NAS goes offline, IT staff can simply adjust the permission settings of the secondary NAS to ensure continuous operation. SnapSync provides the strongest support for uninterrupted business operations and helps users reduce the risk of data loss.

Snapshots multiply backup protection
With near-limitless, instant snapshots, you no longer need to worry. Copy-on-Write technology makes snapshot creation almost instantaneous without affecting ongoing data writes. Snapshot Replica replicates snapshot files to the backup NAS, simplifying data backup with version control.

HBS simplifies 3-2-1 backup plans
HBS centralizes backup, recovery, and synchronization for easy transfer of data from the TS-h686 to another QNAP NAS, a remote server, or cloud storage. HBS supports QuDedup technology, which eliminates redundant data at the source and accelerates multi-version backup.

All-in-one hosting solution for virtual machines and containers
You can rely on Virtualization Station and Container Station for comprehensive virtualization support. In conjunction with the Network & Virtual Switch application, which improves interoperability between virtual machines, containers, QNAP NAS, and other physical devices on the network, you can flexibly allocate physical and virtual network resources to simplify network deployment.

Virtualization Station
Run multiple virtual machines on Windows, Linux, UNIX, and Android, and access them via a web browser or VNC (Virtual Network Computing). Businesses can run virtualized server applications on a single NAS without the need for additional physical servers.

Container Station
Experience lightweight virtualization technologies LXC and Docker, download applications from the integrated Docker Hub Registry, import and export containers, and create a variety of microservices.

Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV)
By installing an SR-IOV compatible PCIe SmartNIC in the TS-h686, you can assign bandwidth resources from a physical network card directly to VMs. Since traffic bypasses the hypervisor vSwitch, it helps improve I/O throughput and network efficiency, ensuring reliable VM applications and lower CPU overheads.

PCIe Expansion to improve 10GbE transmission or enable GPGPU computing
The TS-h686 features two PCIe Gen 3 x 8 slots (each slot offering up to 64 Gb/s bandwidth) and supports the installation of expansion cards to enable additional functionality and greater application potential.

Move business data to the cloud and enjoy low-latency access to cloud-based data
The TS-h686 perfectly integrates the NAS with popular cloud services. By using cloud storage gateways and enabling local caching on the TS-h686 using M.2 SSD slots (M.2 SSDs sold separately), businesses can seamlessly leverage the cloud for storage, backup, and low-latency data recovery. This significantly helps in realizing cost-effective, flexible, and secure hybrid cloud applications.

File-based HybridMount Cloud Gateway
Flexibly expand storage capacity by connecting to cloud storage. You can use QuTS hero apps to manage and edit your cloud files or multimedia files. HybridMount is ideal for online file server collaboration and file-level data analysis.

Block-based VJBOD Cloud Gateway
VJBOD Cloud supports optimized NAS backup for object cloud storage. Block-based data transfer uploads random data and large files block by block to the cloud and only transfers block-based volume or LUN changes such as additions, modifications, or deletions. This is ideal for enterprise-level applications with large file transfer requirements, such as databases, VM volumes, and videos.

Switch operating systems to upgrade current storage
The TS-h686 can also switch to QTS – QNAP's standard NAS operating system. This allows you to migrate drives from your current QTS-based NAS to the more powerful TS-h686 to upgrade your storage infrastructure.

Note: QTS and QuTS hero use different file systems. You must remove all drives from the TS-h686 before switching from QuTS hero to QTS.
